Washington's Outdoor Education for All Act has broadened opportunities for students by increasing access to NatureBridge programs on the Olympic Peninsula and more than 30 other similar outdoor schools across the state. The bill was approved in March 2022 with an overwhelming 96% vote by the state legislature, demonstrating Washington’s strong support for and commitment to outdoor education. With annual funding of $15.9 million provided through the act, more fifth and sixth graders in the state will have the opportunity to attend overnight outdoor schools like NatureBridge.

Currently, just over 50% of Washington students already attend outdoor school programs, and this funding will further increase access and participation. The benefits of outdoor schools, such as NatureBridge, are truly remarkable. Studies show that students who attend outdoor school programs demonstrate increased curiosity and engagement in learning. They develop social and emotional skills, build connections to nature and school, and foster independent thinking and teamwork. Additionally, they form valuable relationships with their peers, enhancing their overall learning experience.

Washington's Outdoor School for All Act is committed to ensuring that all students have equal opportunities for science education. By expanding access to programs like NatureBridge, this legislation is empowering marginalized students to thrive in their studies and develop a lifelong love for nature and learning, thereby benefiting not only the students themselves but also the well-being of our communities.

Outdoor Schools for All has become a national effort, with bills passing first in Oregon, then Washington and now momentum is building in Maine, Maryland and Minnesota. The Washington program will serve as a model for promoting access to science education and fostering a deeper connection to nature for students across the nation. NatureBridge extends our gratitude to Talia Schmitt, Coalition Manager for the Washington Outdoor Schools Coalition, for providing valuable insights and guidance as we continue to build on the success of Outdoor School for All.
