On a chilly autumn afternoon, NatureBridge's National Environmental Science Center (NESC) in Yosemite National Park welcomed its very first school groups, marking a pivotal moment for NatureBridge. This state-of-the-art facility has been over 10 years in the making, and we are thrilled to announce that students are now officially on campus, laughing, learning, and engaging with all of the opportunities for immersive learning at the NESC.
The NESC is located on Henness Ridge within Yosemite National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its ecosystems and rich cultural narratives. By providing a living laboratory for environmental learning, the center equips young people to address pressing ecological challenges and fosters a generation of passionate, informed leaders.
This fall’s student groups experienced adaptable lodging options, capable of accommodating up to 45 participants, and communal meals in the Baxter Building. Family-style dining encouraged reflection and bonding, while the facility’s sustainable features, like a gray water collection system, reinforced lessons in conservation. Students explored the surrounding trails and ecosystems with their NatureBridge educators, learning about fire ecology, studying forest plots, playing in the snow, and experiencing nine distinct Sierra Nevada habitats. They took in breath-taking views of the South Fork Merced River watershed and explored the unique cultural heritage of the area, including a historic National Park Service fire tower. They practiced shelter building. created fireboard investigations, examined skins and skulls from local wildlife, and explored their sense of place with discussions, maps, journaling, and watercolors.
The opening of the NESC signals a monumental step forward for NatureBridge. We hope to expand the NESC’s capacity and add facilities like classrooms and outdoor amphitheaters in the near future. Stay tuned for additional updates as we continue to welcome more young people to the NESC this school year!
