Kevin T. Newman
Kevin Newman joined the NatureBridge board in 2017 and currently serves as the Southern California board chair. His first exposure to NatureBridge came with a seventh grade NatureBridge trip to Yosemite National Park. It was on this trip that Kevin forged a new connection with nature, one that was inspired by the discovery of native ecosystems and the shared, life-changing experience he had with his 15 classmates in 1984.

Since then, Kevin has gone on to lead an extensive career in higher education, serving as Dean & Associate Director of College Counseling of Brentwood School for eight years, and as Associate Director, Assistant Head of School for Strategic Partnerships, and most recently Assistant Head of School and Collegiate Division Director for Windward School in Los Angeles.  In the past, Kevin has served as board chair for The Growing Place, a nonprofit early childhood development center in Santa Monica.

In both his professional and personal life, Kevin is always seeking ways to empower youth to develop a better understanding of the world around them through acquisition of knowledge and experiential learning. He creates opportunities like this for his own children whenever possible. One of his most cherished memories of outdoor exploration and personal discovery is a week-long backpacking trip he took in July 2017 with his family for the 20th anniversary of his marriage to his wife, Amy Weimer. The two renewed their vows in the wilderness of Yosemite National Park at the foot of a waterfall with their two children as witnesses.

As a NatureBridge alumnus and board member, Kevin hopes to help carry out the organization’s strategic plan and increase the exposure of NatureBridge, or the “hidden gem” of experiential environmental education. He hopes to help expose as many students to their first experience of nature as possible and help bridge the gap between the concrete jungle and nearby natural spaces LA has to offer. As a seasoned educator himself, Kevin believes that NatureBridge’s emphasis on connecting with both students and their teachers is one of its most valuable offerings.

Kevin earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of California in Los Angeles. Kevin now lives in Santa Monica with his two kids, aged 15 and 13, and wife Amy. Follow and connect with Kevin on Twitter at @drknewman.
